The Persistent Challenge of Recovered and Stolen Devices

For municipal and law enforcement services, recovering a lost or stolen laptop is only part of the challenge.

When a computer is protected by a password or PIN, identifying its rightful owner can become significantly more difficult. Without access to information that could help establish ownership, a recovered device may remain in storage while authorities work to determine who it belongs to.

This is the challenge that the Châlette-sur-Loing Municipal Police in France is addressing with Pass Revelator, a cybersecurity solution developed by LIFEE.

The objective is straightforward: help authorized personnel identify information that can lead to the legitimate owner of a recovered computer and facilitate its return.

Field Implementation: A Dedicated Tool for Recovered Computers

The solution provided to the municipal police is designed for use in the field and relies on a dedicated support for running Pass Revelator on the computer concerned.

The operational process can be summarized in three steps.

Connecting the Secure Support

Officers connect the Pass Revelator-equipped support to the recovered workstation or laptop, within the procedures applicable to their intervention.

Analyzing Available Information

The solution analyzes accessible information on the computer to identify elements that may help establish the identity of its owner.

Identification and Restitution

The information obtained can then help officers identify and contact the legitimate owner, making it easier to arrange the return of the device.

“When we find a computer, the tool gives us the information we need to identify the owner and return the machine as quickly as possible.”

— Eric Peltier, Municipal Police Officer

15 Years in the Making: From Local Support to Cybersecurity Innovation

Beyond the technology itself, the partnership also tells the story of a project that began locally and progressively developed its activities internationally.

2009: The Beginning in Châlette-sur-Loing

At the age of 19, the project's founder approached the municipality of Châlette-sur-Loing with the aim of developing a solution in the field of cybersecurity.

The municipality provided him with office space and computer equipment, giving the young developer an environment in which to work on his project.

From Local Project to LIFEE

The project subsequently evolved into LIFEE, with the development of Pass Revelator and its deployment to users in France and internationally.

The company also obtained ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications, covering quality management and information security management respectively.

2026: Back to Where It Started

In 2026, the team returned to the municipality where the project originated to provide the Châlette-sur-Loing Municipal Police with Pass Revelator free of charge.

The initiative connects the project's local beginnings with its current development in the cybersecurity sector.

Media Coverage

The story has also received coverage in French regional media:

France 3 Régions — Insolite : comment cette mairie est devenue l'incubateur d'une start-up dans la cybersécurité Actu.fr — “J'étais déjà fasciné par l'IA” : son logiciel s'exporte dans le monde entier

These reports provide additional context about the project's origins in Châlette-sur-Loing and the subsequent development of the company.

A Practical Application of Cybersecurity for Public Services

The Châlette-sur-Loing example illustrates how cybersecurity technology can address a practical problem faced by public services: identifying the legitimate owner of a recovered computer.

For municipal police departments and other authorized services, recovering a device is only the first step. Establishing its ownership can be essential to facilitating its return.

By providing Pass Revelator to the local police department, LIFEE is putting a technology developed in the region into a concrete public-service context.

The initiative also highlights a broader aspect of cybersecurity: technologies initially developed to address digital-access challenges can have practical applications in situations involving lost, recovered, or stolen devices.
